Quarter of a million LED bulbs to light up Liverpool

A quarter of a million LED bulbs will illuminate Liverpool this Christmas, reports Liverpool Confidential.

The city centre, shopping centre Liverpool One and the Albert dock are all to be lit up simultaneously this evening (November 9th), with new parts of the city having Christmas lights for the first time.

Church Street will be the focus of festive entertainment, complete with a 60 foot Christmas tree from Grizedale Forest, which will be decorated with 10,000 LED bulbs.

Councillor Wendy Simon, city council cabinet member of tourism and culture, told the online magazine that the lights are being used to encourage shoppers to visit Liverpool over the holiday period.

"By making the city as attractive as possible with really eye-catching lights and with great entertainment we are showing there is only one place to come for Christmas this year," she explained.

LED bulbs are becoming increasingly commonplace due to their energy-efficiency and low maintenance cost, according to manufacturer OSRAM.
