LED lights for South African streets

LED light bulbs have been used on the streets of Africa for the first time.

The lamps, manufactured by Beka, use LEDs from OSRAM Opto Semiconductors and are designed to improve both the energy-efficiency and durability of street lighting on the continent.

Beka had previously equipped world cup stadiums in South Africa for the 2010 tournament with its fittings and will now use the OSRAM products in its Beka LEDlume series.

Ryan Hunt, country manager at OSRAM in South Africa, said that the company was pleased to continue their work with Beka.

"The consistently high quality of our products, as well as our good relationship with Beka, is what this project and many other joint projects have been based on," he added.

OSRAM recently launched a new range of products and set out plans to get construction projects to become more energy-efficient, rolling out new LED bulbs at the 2011 Greenbuild Expo in Toronto.
