China 'to phase out incandescent bulbs' in favour of LEDs

China is planning to phase out imports of incandescent bulbs in favour of more energy-efficient lamps, reports LEDs magazine.

The three-step programme will begin with the banning on imports of bulbs offering power outputs of 100W and above from the beginning of October next year. These will be followed by 60W and above two years later and 15W and above in 2016.

Part of plans to reduce carbon emissions and save energy in the country, China claims that the phase-out will eventually save 48 billion kW per hour of power, reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 48 million tonnes a year.

Christophe Bahuet, deputy country director of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) said the plans will make a "positive contribution" to China's energy saving goals.

He added that "Phasing-out incandescent lamps in China will promote lighting technology progress".

Welsh Water recently reduced its annual electricity bill by £70,000 after switching to energy-efficient lighting.
