LED bulbs save $146,000 in Stamford

The city of Stamford, in Connecticut, has made an annual saving of $146,000 (£104,000) thanks to the installation of LED Bulbs.

Replacing over 250 high-press sodium lamps with GE's Evolve LED Roadway Medium Cobrahead bulbs has helped make the saving after the city received initial help from an Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block grant, reports LEDs Magazine.

Having undergone a rigorous testing process, the city decided on GE's bulbs because earlier products did not provide the illumination needed.

Nancy Pippicelli, energy and utility manager for the city of Stamford, explained that the lamps required a colour temperature of 4300K, rather than the 6000K range offered by the original bulbs.

"The new LED streetlights are making an important contribution to Stamford's sustainability efforts, as well as curbing costs," she explained. She also pointed out the aesthetic benefits of the bulbs.

It was recently announced that the historic Schinkel Street in Leipzig was to be fitted with energy-efficient LED bulbs in a bid to cut power consumption and costs.
