OSRAM lights up historic town with LED bulbs

LED bulbs have been used to illuminate a historic town in Portugal for the first time.

The energy-efficient bulbs, manufactured by Schreder in co-operation with OSRAM, have lit up the centre of Arraiolos - the first project of its kind in the country.

Saving approximately 50 per cent in terms of energy consumption, the streets have been equipped with warm-white Golden Dragon Plus LEDs, which have a radiation angle of 170 degrees, allowing a balanced and even illumination.

Miguel Sampaio de Mattos, general manager of Schreder Portugal, said the OSRAM-manufactured bulbs have "exceptional colour rendering".

"It allows for increased safety, as the surrounding area is more clearly outlined than is the case with other lighting solutions," he added.

Arraiolos is well known for its traditional carpets and castle, and has a historic centre that is more than 700 years old.

OSRAM recently obtained full ownership of New Jersey-based software developer Encelium Technologies in a bid to improve its energy management systems.
